The staff and students of Andover Newton Seminary are well acquainted with transformation. They have taken part in the transformation of the school from Newton to New Haven. So, it should come as no surprise that in the middle of a pandemic the staff and students are readily flexing and stretching in new ways to embrace another academic year. They know of change and of new beginnings and they are deeply rooted in new space!

To begin the new academic year, most classes have moved smoothly to an online platform. While the staff and students moved online, the Alumni/ae Association Board did as well. It has been wonderful to remain in touch with my Andover Newton Alumni/ae Association peers through online meetings. This year’s Convocation was virtual so folks from coast to could join in effortlessly and can still catch up on the workshops . A fellow alum recently commented to me that they could not wait to sit in their home office in the Midwest and listen to the Rev. Dr. Kirk Byron Jones (MDiv ’81) speak during the opening plenary. In the past this particular alum had not been able to travel the long distance. We were able to witness virtually Founding Dean Sarah Drummond give the State of the School and celebrate the Spirit of the Hill Award. Instead of having to choose between workshops, we could register for all three! What a great lunch break, to sit and listen to Dean Drummond, Professor Heim or Professor Mobley from my church office!

Transformation at Andover Newton seminary is ongoing. In a world today, where clergy serve in uncertain times, I am eager to see how Andover Newton Seminary will continue to educate students to be inspiring leaders who are flexible and capable of envisioning a church of tomorrow. I remain grateful for my education and formation at Andover Newton and stand ready to support and encourage the new students who will one day be my new colleagues in ministry!

Blessings and peace.
